We celebrate the Incarnation of Christ for many days

Merry Christmas! I hope that you and your family are enjoying the blessed season which reminds us that we are loved beyond measure. This great feast reminds us that God so loved the world that He sent His only begotten Son. He sent Jesus precisely to die for our sins. We know that if someone is willing to die for us that they must really love us. Jesus does one better. He chooses to become incarnate and to live for us as well.
This is such a big deal that we celebrate it for many days. It is so awesome to be Catholic! We fast, but we also feast. Don’t short-change yourself by going back to the ordinary too soon. The Incarnation of Christ is earth-shattering and it saves us! Let us celebrate!
In the midst of our Christmas frivolity the Church proposes that on the first day of the new year, we celebrate Mary, the Mother of God. Make no mistake, the Church does not teach that Mary gave Jesus His divinity. Rather, the Church understands that Jesus is a person who has two natures; human and divine. Jesus is 100 percent human (except for sin) and 100 percent divine. So, Jesus is God. Mary is Jesus’ mother. It is therefore accurate to say that Mary is the mother of a person who is God. So, Mary is the Mother of God. Just like Mary Ball Washington is the mother of George Washington, but did not bestow the Presidency upon him, so too Mary is the mother of Jesus but did not bestow divinity upon Him. This celebration of God using a lowly maiden, a human, to accomplish the Incarnation is so extraordinary that it is a Holy Day of Obligation.
So, as your Christmas festivities continue, and you are celebrating the fact that God allows us to participate in our salvation, don’t forget to get to Mass. Also, don’t forget to dedicate 2019 to the Lord. Let us all pray that we will grow in holiness this coming year.
