Holy Spirit Catholic Church parishioner and Montgomery Catholic Preparatory School senior Isabelle Cochran was the female recipient of the 2019 Jimmy Hitchcock Award on April 30 at Frazer Memorial United Methodist Church in Montgomery.
The award recognizes Christian leadership and athletic success. Isabelle is a state champion track runner and leads vacation Bible school at Holy Spirit. She has more than $350,000 in scholarship offers and has a 4.34 grade-point average.
She plans to attend Auburn University and major in mechanical engineering.
The award is named after Jimmy Hitchcock, who was Auburn’s first All-American in football as well as an All-American in baseball. Hitchcock’s devotion to youth athletics led to the introduction in Montgomery of Little League baseball. He served as Little League Commissioner in Montgomery until his death on June 24, 1959.
Shortly after the death of Jimmy Hitchcock, a few of his friends and admirers expressed to each other a mutual desire to be a party to some movement to perpetuate his memory in an appropriate way. These friends invited others to join them in forming a committee for this purpose and the Jimmy Hitchcock Memorial Award Program was born.
