Ellen Torres, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. John Torres Jr. of St. Pius X Parish in Mobile, was attending Music Camp in Brevard, N.C. on full scholarship received while a student at McGill-Toolen High School and member of the band.
The annual Fleet Blessing was held at Bayou La Batre, sponsored by St. Margaret Parish. Rev. Kevin Duignan was serving as pastor of St. Margaret.
The Interfaith Committee for Human Concern sponsored four education and recreational programs for underprivileged elementary and high school students in the Roger Williams, Mobile Terrance’s Trinity Gardens and Prichard Communities. Rev. Thomas Weise was executive secretary of the organization and representative of the Catholic parishes.
The Priests’ Senate of Mobile-Birmingham Dioceses re-elected Rev. David Sullivan president. Other officers elected were: Rt. Rev. William Houck, vice president; Very Rev. William James, secretary; and Rev. Sean O’Connor, treasurer.

The Alabama Hospital Public Relations and Marketing Society of the Alabama Hospital Association awarded Mercy Medical a First Place Gold Award for the series entitled “To Everything there is a Season-Mercy Mobile Hospice.”
Bishop Joseph A. Durrick of Nashville, the last bishop to head the entire Roman Catholic Church in the state of Tennessee, died at his home in Bessemer, Ala. He had previously served as auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of Mobile-Birmingham.
Spring Hill College received one of the largest gifts in the history of the college from the estate of Stanley H. and Virginia Cassidy of Wisconsin.
The late Archbishop John L. May allowed the Catholic Church Extension Society to send a $50,000 grant for a new mission church in the Archdiocese of Mobile.
McGill-Toolen Athletic Director Paul Crane and President/Principal Rev. W. Bry Shields welcomed new coaches Larry Wacker, head basketball coach, and Pat Arensberg, an assistant football coach, to the coaching staff.
Overall winners in five events of the fourth annual Toy Bowl Golf Tour were Ryan Allenbach, Corpus Christi Parish, and Leigh Buhring of St. Dominic Parish.
Mobilian Laurie Wittman Oester, graduate of Convent of Mercy and Spring Hill College, was named director of Campus Ministry for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.
“The Catholic Week’s” Melinda Braswell, staff writer and production manager, received the Award for Excellence in Photography for Newspaper at the Press Club of Mobile 15th annual awards presentation.
