Families play and pray at conference

DAPHNE — Hundreds who attended the Archdiocese of Mobile’s “One Faith One Family” conference learned the three Rs of the liturgy of the domestic church.

Featured speakers Dr. Greg and Lisa Popcak explained Aug. 2-3 at the Daphne Civic Center how people can grow in holiness through routine family life tasks, plus offered specific tips to create and maintain a faith-filled home. They also highlighted the three Rs — relationship, rituals of connection and reaching out.

The Popcaks are authors, directors of the Pastoral Solutions Institute and radio hosts of “More2Life.”

“What roots your family in holiness is the degree to which the relationships in your home foster the love that comes from the heart of God,” Greg Popcak said. “The relationships you have in your home are the foundation of a healthy Church-based spirituality.”

Lisa Popcak told the story of a twist her son put on the Corporal Works of Mercy as Lisa was preparing him for his First Communion.

“We were going over the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy,” Lisa explained. “At the end of this list, my son looked up from his breakfast and said ‘Gee, Mom they should call it the Corporal Works of Mommy because you do that all day long.’

“Talk about lifting the mundane into the Holy.”

The theme to the biennial family conference was “The Family that Plays Together Prays Together.” Along with insight from the Popcaks, there was time for play – including a Catholic-centered trivia game called “Faithful Feud.”

Archbishop Thomas J. Rodi closed the weekend with Mass. In his homily he challenged everyone to go out and enjoy time with their families.

“We can get so caught up in the here and now,” Archbishop Rodi said. “I’ve been with a number of people as they were dying and I’ve got to say the regrets I’ve heard voiced were the regrets of not spending time enjoying the people that were important to them.”
