The Catholic Week

The Archdiocese of Mobile’s Office for the Protection of Minors and Adults is enhancing its child protection efforts by adopting Catholic Mutual Group’s Safe Environments Program.

Catholic Mutual Group’s platform, titled CMGConnect, manages initial training and provides annual retraining for all volunteers planning to work with youths, all archdiocesan employees and priests, seminarians and deacons.

“Going to a new system offered us a better way to protect our children,” said Ginger Koppersmith, director of the Office for the Protection of Minors and Adults.

The Office for the Protection of Minors and Adults currently has more than 11,000 active users in its system.

Those who’ve been trained under the previous program will need to activate an already-created account at before their annual renewal has expired. All seeking retraining have an individual username and should use the format “FirstName.LastName.AOM.” The password is “1234” for all retrainees. All retraining is done online.

Those seeking an initial training must create a new account and register to attend an on-site training class. They take place monthly at various sites throughout the archdiocese and preregistration is now mandatory to attend a training class.

Among the new program’s benefits according to Koppersmith are enhanced security, more frequent background checks and reduced paperwork.

The new retraining program now includes an approximately 20-minute video that depicts various scenarios with children that could come up for volunteers and employees. The previous retraining program included articles and a short quiz.

“We find the videos are more interesting and more educational,” Koppersmith said. “We are getting great feedback on those.”
