I am writing this article during Holy Week and it will be published during Easter.  Happy Easter! If we step back and think about what it means to be Christian, I think we would realize that Easter is in fact the biggest deal.  We tend to make a bigger deal of Christmas. One can argue that without Christmas then Easter wouldn’t happen and that is a fair point.  However, Easter is the reason for Christmas. Christ was born to die. He came to redeem us.  All of us are going to die, but He is the only one in all of history who was born precisely so that He could die.

Easter is a big deal. Of course, there is only one way to share in the Resurrection of Jesus.  The only road to the Resurrection is the Cross.  We must share in the sufferings of Christ to share in the Resurrection.  I do find however, that often we focus too much on the way and not enough on the destination.  In other words, we find it easy to meditate on the Crucifixion but less easy to meditate on the Resurrection.  We find it easier to fast than to joyfully celebrate.  We will fast for all of Lent with varying degrees of success and then two days after Easter Sunday we are back to our normal routine.  The Church is still celebrating Easter, but many of us shift into Ordinary Time long before our celebration of Easter should end.

Please keep celebrating Easter.  Did you know that for 8 days we treat it like Easter Sunday?  Go to Mass Easter Week and notice.  After those 8 days (known as the Octave) it remains Easter Season until the Feast of Pentecost which is 50 days after Easter.  During this season you may try:

  1. Wish people in your family, “Happy Easter,” at least for the Octave.
  2. Go out to lunch or supper at least once during the Easter Season and remind your family why you are going out, what it is we celebrate.
  3. Host a dinner party to celebrate Easter sometime in the next couple of weeks.
