For The Catholic Week
The Catholic Youth Organization, McGill-Toolen Catholic High School and St. Michael Catholic High School are excited to announce changes to youth football and cheerleading programs for Fall 2019. They include:
* Middle School Football and Cheerleading
* Expanded competition for CYO Division 6 (5th and 6th grade) Tackle Football
* Division 4 (3rd and 4th grade) Flag Football
* Kindergarten Flag Football
Middle School Football and Cheerleading:
Students attending one of our archdiocesan schools in seventh and eighth grade will have the chance to participate in middle school football and cheer programs through McGill-Toolen Catholic High School and St. Michael Catholic High School.
McT will field separate teams for both football and cheer in seventh and eighth grades while the Cardinals will field combined 7th/8th grade teams for both sports.
These programs are now part of the AHSAA and must follow all guidelines which include attending a middle school that feeds into the high school for which they will compete. Signups will be this spring. For more information visit www.mcgill-toolen.org or www.stmichaelchs.org.
* Kindergarten flag football
* Division 2 (grades 1 and 2) flag football (no change)
* Division 4 (grades 3 and 4) will play flag football instead of tackle
* Division 6 (grades 5 and 6) will play 11-man tackle football with an expanded schedule to include teams outside the CYO to allow for more opportunities to compete.
Our cheer program will continue to operate as it has in the past with the addition of a Kindergarten squad that will cheer for our Kindergarten Flag Football teams.
CYO Fall Sports Registration begins May 1. Check with your athletic director for more info.
The Toy Bowl is an Archdiocesan tradition that we are committed to keeping as we make some changes to our programs. Our eighth-graders are encouraged to participate in the Toy Bowl Court activities with the Mass and banquet Tuesday, Oct. 29 and Coronation Saturday, Nov. 2. Our Senior Division Toy Bowl game will feature McGill-Toolen Middle School (eighth-grade team) and St. Michael Middle School. The game is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 30. Other Toy Bowl games will take place on Saturday, Nov 2.
The CYO, the CYO Advisory Committee, McGill-Toolen and St. Michael have been working over the past several years to ensure that the programs offered are consistent with the mission of the CYO. We are confident these changes will not only advance our mission, but benefit our young athletes well beyond the playing fields. Please continue to pray for the safety of our athletes and the advancement of this mission as we continue to serve the children of the Archdiocese in Mobile and Baldwin County.
